Spring 2024 

One of the most touching moments of starting this small farm has been hearing the stories of gardening/farming through the lens of my grandparents. My grandmother grew up on a gardenia farm in Arlington Massachusetts that supplied florals and backdrops for Theodore Rosevelt during his presidency. 

Recently she took me downstairs to a little dark closet in her basement where she dug out prize winning hybrid squash seeds she had grown in her backyard and mistakenly cross pollinated with a neighbor’s variety in the 1980s.

These squash seeds, that were featured in a local newspaper and inquired about by Burpee Seeds, have been carefully stowed away in old holiday and department store envelopes, waiting to see the light of day, literally. 

I am honored and excited to hopefully revive this family heirloom (pun intended) and time capsule of hard work and memories, one magic seed at a time!

For our inaugural year at SummerSalt Farm we decided to order from Hudson Valley Seed Co.

This fall we prepared and planted our first crop of garlic! 

We ordered our seed garlic from Keene Organics that grows organic, heirloom, non-gmo garlic on small family farms in Wisconsin.

 
This year we chose to plant German Extra Hardy and Chesnok Red varieties.
